Crewel work is embroidery using wool and dates back to the Bayeux Tapestry. It was also very popular in Jacobean England. During the 16th and 17th centuries it was used to make luxurious interiors. Examples of which are cushions and wall hangings. It is one of the oldest forms of surface stitching – at least a thousand years old – and the technique itself is steeped in history.
